I owe a lot of what I am to my father, Harry. A Navy pilot and a father of eight, he taught me respect and determination, as well as a strong work ethic. He also passed on a strong competitive spirit—my dad always wanted to win, and so do I!
That drive filled me with energy and enabled me to succeed at whatever I did. I was always moving forward, from my first job at a dress shop, to a stint as a wire wrapper for Ramtek, to a receptionist role where I worked my way up to be administrative assistant for the VP at Fairchild. I was never interested in sitting still; instead, I was always looking for the next opportunity.
That’s what led me to move on from my position at Fairchild to a startup company in Silicon Valley, where I served as operations manager. It was there that I learned how to negotiate,
as I worked with companies to facilitate the needed supplies and cash flow.
That startup would eventually shut down, which allowed me the opportunity to move to San Diego. I started working in a marketing position, but the traditional schedule was just not going to work for me, since I needed more flexibility as a working mother.
As one of eight children, I had always known I would have my own family eventually. My first son, Joshua, gave me a glimpse of what love is all about. It’s a huge responsibility to take care of a child, but it’s a responsibility you accept with joy. It was my goal to be there for my children and do everything I could for them.
One of the things I knew I had to do was to provide a place for my kids to come home to. I was actually in escrow when I was in labor with Joshua—I remember signing forms while on the delivery table!
The value of a home for my family was very apparent to me. So when I wasn’t finding flexibility at my marketing job, I turned to real estate, where I could not only improve the lives of my own family, but also help others achieve their goals of homeownership. It’s incredibly rewarding to get to know their families and to be a part of their growth!
I found that not only did I love real estate, but I also had a real knack for it. The determination I learned from my father, the business skills I developed in my career, and my experience with my own home and family had all combined into just the right skill set.
My four children (Joshua, Barbara, Ryan, and Byron) have remained my greatest joy in life. I used to go out and work with Barbara in the stroller, knocking on doors to meet new clients. It must have rubbed off on her, because now she’s a Realtor® herself!
My children also inspired me to be there for my community, as I helped to start a group with the mothers at their school to bring our children to the beach weekly and spend time together. While the kids learned a love for the outdoors, I discovered a passion for serving those around me in new ways. Today, I serve on the board at the YMCA and do volunteer work for Interfaith, among other organizations. It’s so fulfilling to help make this a better place to call home.
